Cold Process Soapmaking with Megan Duchek

Learn the art of Cold Process Soapmaking!

One of the easiest ways to make DIY soap is with the cold process method, which involves combining oils and sodium hydroxide lye, causing a chemical reaction called saponification. In the process, you get to add oils, scents, and colorants to make your soap more personal to you. If you are allergic to fragrances, you are welcome to attend and make an unscented bar, however, keep in mind that others may be wanting to use fragrances.

PLEASE BRING WITH YOU:

Glasses or safety goggles

A notebook to keep notes or jot down ideas

Optional to bring: Any "garnishes" you might like to use such as dried flowers, dried herbs, etc, Something to use for a soap mold, immersion blender (immersion blenders are a necessity. I have two but if you have one that you don't often use for food and are willing to use with soap PLEASE bring it)

Take home 5 bars of homemade soap!!

A BIT ABOUT OUR PRESENTER MEGAN DUCHEK:

I am a maker. If I am not creating something my mental health will suffer for it! This is definitely a trait I inherited from my Grandma Dee. In fact, it was the same amazing woman who first taught me to craft. I was always begging to go to her house when I was a girl whether it was to make decoupage garbage pails from fabric, mod podge, and ice cream pails or to learn to crochet when I was old enough. I happened to inherit her antique loom when I became an adult and it became too much for Grandma to keep up with. This loom was her best friend... her confidant.. She told me she got a lot of good thinking done when she was weaving and, like me, it kept her sane. Soapmaking is a fairly new endeavour that came to fruition from necessity. My grandma also made soap although it's not one of the things that we did together. My partner and I are homesteaders (for lack of a better term) and I think that Grandma's generation was too although not by choice.
