Hand wood carving . . . I have been looking for this class for a long time. Participants will be carving a house out of wood provided by our artist, Cheryl Andrist.
Friday, March 21st, 7-9pm and Saturday, March 22nd, 9am-5pm.
Participants must be 18 years of age or older.
Participants are asked to bring with them:
Small Xacto knife,
Olfa utility knife,
Pencil,
Cutting mat or board,
Bag lunch (you are free to leave for lunch if you would rather)
Please register by midnight, Tuesday, March 11th so carving sets and other supplies can be ordered for the class.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Cheryl was born and raised in the Bienfait-Estevan communities. Her creative spirit has always been a part of her life. After she raised her family, she was encouraged to attend Regina University to continue learning within the arts program.
In 2024, Cheryl received her BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) with Distinction. She accomplished a Major in Printmaking and a Minor in Art History. After completion of her studies, she was employed at the Estevan Art Gallery & Museum, first as the Educator, then as Director/Curator. Cheryl is now retired and continues to work with art projects, to include: fabric, oil, watercolour, woodcarving, porcupine quills, beads, and printmaking.
Within the community, Cheryl has taught art to both young people and adults through private classes and public workshops.
Cheryl has participated in OSAC (Organization of Saskatchewan Art Councils), Visions Art Guild exhibitions, Saskatchewan Craft Council and in quilt shows, contests and displays. She has had solo and group shows in the University of Regina Fifth Parallel Art Gallery and at the Estevan Art Gallery and Museum. In 2004, Cheryl won the coveted “1st Art Invitational Student Art Competition” that is sponsored by the BMO Financial Group in Toronto, Ontario. Other exhibits took place in Medicine Hat, Alberta; and from 2012 - 2013, she had a two person OSAC exhibit tour. She also has a commissioned metal sculpture named “Free Spirit” installed at Estevan’s Affinity Place.
Her work is in private collections across Canada and the United States. Some of the corporate sponsors who own Cheryl’s work are: BMO Financial Group, Toronto; Ovedesign, Toronto; SaskPower, Regina; CBC Radio Corporation, Toronto; UNICEF National Office; and Art Gallery of Toronto. Other countries include: Mexico, United States of America, Germany, Netherlands, while other art is in Canadian provinces: British Columbia, Alberta, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba plus Saskatchewan.
