Beginner's Shuttle Tatting

  • Moosomin Visual Arts Centre 701 Ellice Street Moosomin, SK, S0G 3N0 Canada (map)

Tatting is an ancient knotting art dating back over 200 years. It is believed it originated with fishermen and sailors as the tatting shuttle is similar to a tool used to repair fishing nets. It uses a tatting shuttle and crochet cotton . . . the finer the crochet cotton, the more dainty your tatting will be.

In Canada, tatting is not as popular as knitting and crocheting but it is hugely popular in Germany, Italy and Japan. The fine lace created by tatting is different from either knitting or crochet. It can be said that tatting is more ornamental whereas knitting and crocheting are more practical.

Melissa is a retired educator who has enjoyed tatting for over 40 years. She learned to tat when she was 12 by attending a course instructed at the Regional Library, but those lessons were reinforced by her maternal grandmother who was also a tatter. Besides tatting, Melissa enjoys all sorts of arts and crafts as well as gardening and preserving. She is currently working part-time with the Moosomin Visual Arts Centre as an administrative assistant and she helps with the kids’ programming.

This class is limited to 5 participants.

Participants must be 13 years of age or older.

You will require your own tatting shuttle. These can be purchased at Sew Creative & Interiors in Moosomin or they can be ordered online. Crochet cotton will be provided.
